Computer Science

The PhD curriculum in "Computer Science" is based on a central research theme on "modelling, analysis, formal verification and deployment of distributed systems" that includes a variety of scientific topics, among which modelling and analysis of business processes and service-oriented applications; methods and languages for complex systems; and analysis, verification, and testing of distributed systems.

Ph.D. students in Computer Science are usually affiliated with the Computer Science Division, hosting a large group of researchers strongly active in the fields of Software Engineering, Formal Methods and Security.

The Ph.D. program in Computer Science also provides the doctoral students with an interdisciplinary background involving scientific disciplines from other Science Divisions, including Physics, Mathematics, and eHealth.

Theoretical and engineering activities are carried out within the Computer Science Division. Some of these activities also fall within several local, national and international research projects, funded by e.g. Region Marche, MIUR (PRIN) and EU (FP7-ICT).

Results achieved by the members of the division are published in top-level international journals and conferences. This, together with a strong orientation towards the third mission, lead the Computer Science Division to achieve a high reputation at both national and international level.

The Ph.D. program in Computer Science aims at forming skilled researchers able to tackle theoretical and practical challenges in different fields of Computer Science, within both academia and industry.

To this aim, Ph.D. students are involved in advanced research activities, in collaboration with a large variety of national and international partners. This typically includes scientific visits abroad to high-ranking institutions. Several Ph.D. students in Computer Science have taken, and take, part of applied research projects (EUREKA), financed in collaboration with Marche Region, UniCam, and local companies. Those projects may involve different topics of interest for companies, ranging from Big Data Analysis to Cloud Computing in Green Smart City, and more.

Mathematics

The Ph.D. curriculum in "Mathematics" includes a variety of scientific topics ranging from Logic, Geometry, to Mathematical Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Operational Research. Ph.D. students in Mathematics are usually affiliated with the Mathematics Division. Moreover, the Ph.D. programs in Physics include activities at the frontier of different scientific disciplines in connection to other Science Divisions including Physics, Earth Sciences, and Computer Science.

The activities carried out within the Mathematical Division can be divided into two main fields, sometimes interconnected each other, both mixing theoretical and computational-experimental aspects.

The first area concerns mathematical methods for the study of information and shape. The basic ideas of information and shape are detailed in a plurality of points of view: dynamic systems and morphogenesis, knot theory and topology, differential geometry, algebraic fields – with applications in biology, art, design, common life.

Therefore, the main targets in this area are given by

  • (a) application of the theory of dynamical systems to the study of morphogenetic fields;
  • (b) topology and knot theory with applications to computational design and aesthetics;
  • (c) analysis of geometric structures and physical properties with a high degree of symmetry;
  • (d) study of rings of integers in number fields, classification of their modules, connected with computability;
  • (e) methods of model theory for modules on rings
  • (f) study of differential equations and functions of several complex variables with applications in geometry.

The second area is related to mathematical methods for industrial and finance applications. Theoretical and numerical models are developed for the study of issues related to various topics of interest for enterprises and finance operators. In particular, this line of research is focused on the following targets:

  • (a) analysis and control of linear and nonlinear dynamic systems (also under fault conditions), of robotic systems, power systems, and energy conversion;
  • (b) study of impact problems through modeling, numerical simulation, and analysis of experimental results;
  • (c) optimization problems, classification, and regression in logistics, finance, electricity market, in biology;
  • (d) analysis and image reconstruction by numerical techniques;
  • (e) numerical evidence of blow-up for the Navier-Stokes equations;
  • (f) resolution of differential equations through numerical methods in finance.

The Ph.D. program in Mathematics includes a period which may vary from three to six months, to be spent in a foreign institution connected with the carried out research project.

Moreover, several Ph.D. students in Physics are also being included in the applied research Program EUREKA, financed in collaboration with Regione Marche, Unicam, and enterprises of Marche Region. Those projects may involve different topics of interest for local enterprises, ranging from sustainable energy development to prototype design and modeling, optical systems, and more.

Physical and chemical processes in Earth systems

The Ph.D. curriculum in "Physical and chemical processes in Earth systems" covers a range of topics of interest in the Earth Sciences. These include mineralogy, geophysics, tectonics, geochemistry/petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, earth surface processes, and Earth Science Education.

Ph.D. students in Earth Sciences are usually affiliated with the Geology Division, which hosts research groups enjoying close connections with local, national and international partners. Moreover, the Ph.D. programs in Earth Sciences include activities that cross interdisciplinary boundaries and include active collaborations with other Science Divisions including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science.

The overall philosophy is to try to treat Earth Science problems from a quantitative point of view, hence the important collaborations with other scientific disciplines, within Camerino, and also including valuable international collaborations for many topics.

Employment prospects for PhD graduates include academic institutions, government and private research labs, private industries (petroleum, mining, materials science, environmental applications).

Some Ph.D. students in Earth Sciences are also involved in applied research projects (EUREKA), financed in collaboration with the Regione Marche, UniCam and enterprises of the Marche Region. Current projects include geothermal energy, hydrological problems, and work at the interface between seismology and building construction.

Theoretical and Experimental Physics

The Ph.D. curriculum in "Theoretical and Experimental Physics" includes a variety of scientific topics ranging from Condensed Matter, Nuclear, Many-body physics to Material Science, Nanotechnology, Quantum information, Quantum Optics and Physics education. Ph.D. students in Physics are usually affiliated with the Physics Division, hosting several research groups enjoying close connections with local, national and international partners.

Moreover, the Ph.D. programs in Physics include activities at the frontier of different scientific disciplines in connection to other Science Divisions including Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Computer Science.

Experimental, theoretical and computational activities are carried out within the Physics Division. The research groups have a solid international reputation and results obtained by our scientists are reported in many publications on high-level international magazines.

The recent evaluation of the research activities has confirmed that the Physics Division at UniCam is ranked among the best Italian research Institutes in Physics.

Our Ph.D. programs in Physics are conceived to involve our Ph.D. students in advanced research activities, in deep interconnection with foreign international laboratories. The educational programs usually include extended visits to foreign institutions within established collaboration programs. The stimulating research environment and the variety of national and international collaborations are regarded as important assets for Ph.D. students looking either for further involvement in advanced scientific research in international institutions or for a job requiring top-level education.

Several Ph.D. students in Physics are also being included in applied research projects (EUREKA), financed in collaboration with Regione Marche, UniCam, and enterprises of Marche Region. Those projects may involve different topics of interest for local enterprises, ranging from sustainable energy development to prototype design and modeling, optical systems, and more.
